Posted on: 15/Jun/2022 9:12:31 AM
In another few days, the TN state government would put an end to the mystery about the site for the second airport in Chennai. A mammoth amount of Rs 40000 crores would be spent for the second airport in Chennai. On 17th June 2022, T would submit the shortlisted sites like Pannur of Tiruvallur district and Parandur of Kancheepuram district to the Centre.

On the same day, minister for industries Mr. Thangam Thennarasu and department secretary Mr. Krishnan would be meeting Mr. Jyotiraditya Scindia, minister for civil aviation. There would be discussions regarding many pending issues including the site for the second airport in Chennai.

Techno-economical feasibility as well as OLS or Obstacle Limitation surface reports would be prepared once the site gets approval from the central government. It is worthy to note that OLS report plays an important role in short listing a site. The sources from AAI have made it clear that the report would look into airspace around aerodromes that must be free from obstacles for the aircraft to be operated safely.

Various activities that would be carried out in the techno-economical feasibility reports are surveying, master planning, financial models, mandatory clearances and bid management for Greenfield airport site. It has been brought to light that both the sites mentioned above have got some small problems. The sources concluded that these small issues could be sorted out.

It is now revealed that the construction of the second airport in Chennai would not start in another 3 to 4 months but it would take a longer time. The reasons cited for this delay are site clearance, in-principle nod, the selection of consultants for project report preparation plus several other important clearances etc. It is learnt that still no decision has been taken on Central as well as state shares respective in the project.

It was in the year 1999 the search for the Greenfield airport began when the state govt and AAI decided to develop a new airport in Chennai. Information is that TNIDC was assigned the task of identifying the land for the airport. It is important to mention that Scott Wilson Kirkpatric was appointed as a consultant.
