The roads in Chennai are being renamed by GCC or Greater Chennai Corporation now. Many applications from the stakeholders about renaming various roads are also being scrutinised by GCC.

According to Greater Chennai Corporation  Commissioner, Mr, Gagandeep Singh Bedi, it was clear that the civic body has started to receive letters from various stakeholders to rename roads in Chennai. The damaged name boards have been replaced by new ones in several roads in Chennai now.  New name boards would be erected in as many as 4013 roads and a survey was conducted also.

In as many as 1561 roads in Chennai, new name boards have been erected and the remaining roads too would have new name boards soon. Point to be noted is that before beginning the renaming work the officials of GCC would have demands from the residents about renaming their roads.

Normally, GCC would not entertain the request for renaming roads but requests would be considered if they were found to be valid and backed by reliable information about the place.

Whannels Road near Egmore railway station has been renamed by GCC and the new name is Anna EVR Maniammaiyar. It must be noted that the road was renamed as per the request made by K. Veeramani, secretary of Periyar Suyamariyathai Prachara Niruvanam. The role played by Maniammaiyar in the Dravidian movement was highlighted in the request from Mr. K. Veeramani.

It must not be forgotten that Maniammaiyar played a huge role in the growth and development of destitute children by providing higher education to these kids. In the year 1994, a statue of Maniammaiyar was inaugurated on the road by the former PM of India Mr. V.P. Singh. Recently, Padmavathy Nagar Main Road was renamed after actor Vivekh as per the demands from the residents is well known.
