Akshaya Tritiya, one of the important Hindu observances, is celebrated every year in the Hindu calendar month of Vaisakha on the Tridiya Tithi of Sukla Paksha. The festival of wealth is celebrated on May 3 this year across the country. Akshaya Tritiya is said to bring good luck to the home. Akshaya in Sanskrit language means forever and Tritiya means the third. It is believed that if you buy something during the Akshaya Tritiya it will always be with you. People believe in investing in silver, gold and other valuables such as property, business and jewelry as it is believed that the valuables will stay forever. Also, the valuable items are purchased only during the off-peak hours. According to religious belief, the day brings good luck and prosperity to everyone.
People all over the country worship Goddess Lakshmi on this day to seek her blessings for wealth and prosperity in the house. Lord Vishnu is also worshipped on this day for happiness and good luck in their lives. Padma Purana scriptures tell that Lord Vishnu told Narada that based on what human beings do on this day, they will get the benefit of their labor later on.
The festival has a special religious significance. Mythology tells a tale about the history behind the festival. It is said that Akshay Kumar, the son of Brahmadeva was born. Hence the day is called as Akshaya Tritiya. Ganga incarnation and Parasuramar Jayanti are also celebrated on the same day.

Panjangam suggests that the Tridiya Tithi will start from 5.18 a.m. on May 3 and will end at 7.32 a.m. on May 4. The best time to worship Goddess Vishnu and Goddess Lakshmi is from 5.39 am to 12.18 pm on Tuesday.
