Who would like to drink the groundwater and lorry water having a stench?
The shocking truth is that the residents belonging to Thoraipakkam in south Chennai are consuming the stench based groundwater as well as lorry water despite having a new overhead tank. The reason for that was CMWSSB or Chennai Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board hasnt yet started storing water in the overhead tank here.
Nearby dumping yard in Perungudi has spoiled the groundwater in localities such as Ananda Nagar, MCN Nagar, Vinayaga Nagar etc plus others in wards 193 and 194. This was highlighted by the president of Federation of Thoraipakkam Welfare Associations Mr. A. Francis..
He threw light on how when Thoraipakkam was a village panchayat the local body supplied spoiled groundwater through bore wells. It has been 13 long years since the locality merged with Chennai Corporation but even now just a few houses receive water from metro water. A few months back, CMWSSB had built an overhead tank on the Pillayar Koil Street.
It is true that there has been a huge delay in the construction of this overhead tank. The work should have been over by 2015 itself but it got completed just four months back. Point is that CMWSSB began constructing an overhead tank in Secretariat Colony during the same time to store and send water to Pillayar Koil Street tank and the work was not completed.
Now, the residents want the water to be sent to the new tank from the sump as there are pipelines present. Till now, the residents belonging to Thoraipakkam have been depending totally on the private and metro water lorries for water.
After the construction of an overhead tank at secretariat Colony gets completed, pipe water supply would be provided to the residents here. This was confirmed by a local officer from the metro water department.
