Stunning increase in prices of veggies at Koyambedu market now!!

Posted on: 19/Apr/2022 9:27:34 AM
The prices of vegetables have increased by 10% now at the highly popular Koyambedu wholesale market in Chennai. The reason for the increase was due to the fall in the arrivals of vegetables.

Traders have mentioned that the prices of fast selling watery veggies have remained stable but the prices of all vegetables would increase in one or 2 days. Truth is that the supply from the neighbouring states would reduce further.

Mr. P. Sukumaran, treasurer, Koyambedu Wholesale Merchants Association explained about how the market normally receives more than 500 truckloads of vegetables and how the supply has reduced due to the second crop cultivation season. He added that with further reduction in the vegetable supply from neighbouring states like AP, Karnataka etc the prices of vegetables would further increase by 10%. It is learnt that the supply of vegetables from within TN has stopped completely now except for Ooty carrot and beetroot.

According to a wholesale trader at the market it was very clear that in one or 2 days the market might get less than 400 truckloads of vegetables from the neighbouring states. The prices of vegetables would increase by atleast 20percent. It is now brought out that the prices would remain stable or would increase till the next month. For the last 2 days at the market the sales of vegetables have been lacklustre only. When compared to wholesale rates, the prices of vegetables at the retail shops in the Chennai city have gone up by an additional 5 to 10% now.

It must be noted that currently beans are being sold for Rs 65 per kilo, broad beans for Rs 50 per kilo. Rs35 is the price for one kilo of carrot and Rs 25 is the cost for one kilo of tomato and onion. Cauliflower is being sold for Rs 15 to Rs 20 per kilo.
