The quality of lives of knee amputated persons would be amazing in the future!! Soon, above knee amputees would be able to sit easily and comfortably in crowded areas.
The news is that Indian Institute of Technology, Madras or IIT-M researchers would be launching �Kadam� an indigenously developed prosthetic knee for the sake of above knee amputees. This would be India`s first ever polycentric prosthetic knee.
It was brought to light by a statement from IITM that this prosthetic knee was developed in India by a team at TTK Centre for Rehabilitation Research and Device Development R2D2 at IIT-M in association with Society of Biomedical Technology or SBMT and Mobility India.
The sensational piece of information is that above knee amputated persons would be able to walk with comfortable gait plus they would be stable. The risk of stumbling would be eliminated with this superb Kadam. When compared to the hinge joint, this prosthetic knee has got advantages due to its multiple axes of rotation. It is noteworthy that this multiple axes of rotation would offer greater control over prosthesis while walking. Maximum knee flexion of 160 degrees would be possible too and the amputees would be able to sit well in congested places. Superb!!
