In 150 places Chennai Corporation would be doing this?

In atleast 150 locations belonging to the Chennai city, the GCC would be strengthening the public toilet infrastructure by constructing toilets at a cost of Rs 13 lakhs to Rs 22 lakhs based on the number of seats. These toilets would be more spacious than the existing ones in the city. The Chennai Corporation would be concentrating on the usability factor to encourage people to use public toilets. These toilets would have separate seats for the differently able persons too.

A senior officer belonging to GCC expressed his thoughts. He spoke about how the public toilets were built a long time back and how they do not have wash basins and urinals etc in mens toilets. These issues would be taken care of in the construction of new public toilets.

He then mentioned that zonal teams carried out identification of localities in Chennai for the construction of new public toilets. Factors such as proximity to bus stops and railway stations and nearest land availability were taken into consideration. It is learnt that new toilets would be coming up in localities like Koyambedu, Vadapalani, Ashok Nagar, Saidapet etc.

Point is that finding land parcels     near the areas where people congregate and where there is need was one of the challenges. Some toilets that are in bad condition would be demolished and new toilets would be built. To make sure that the public toilets are maintained well, operation and maintenance of toilets would be privatised in 3 GCC zones such as Royapuram, Thiru Vi Ka Nagar and in some places belonging to Teynampet.
