Drinking water supply along OMR during this peak summer is making news now!!

Posted on: 24/Mar/2022 9:28:55 AM
Peak summer is around the corner and things havent changed for the residents belonging to places like Thorapipakkam, Sholinganallur and other various places along OMR.

These residents would be depending on the private water tankers even this summer season also. It must be noted that some of the water connections in these places are nearing completion but piped water supply would not be available for them. The Coronavirus pandemic has led to closures of IT firms, educational institutions and other commercial establishments in these places. Now these have reopened once again as the Coronavirus pandemic has been brought under control. The drinking water demand would be more now in these localities.

It was mentioned by Mr. Nijalingam, president of TN Private Water Tanker Lorry Owner Association that demand for the drinking water supply has increased to more than 20percent in the month of March. He hinted that the cost of drinking water would be increased by RS 100 per load and that was because of hike in the fuel rates plus losses truckers faced in the lockdown.

In some places, prices of packaged drinking water have gone up by Rs 5 to Rs 10 per can. When compared to the drinking water supplied by the private water tankers, drinking water supplied by metro water through tankers is less only. Truth is that the metro water online registration process for drinking water is tedious when compared to the registration process for drinking water through private tankers. Inspite of the absence of water connections also, water tax has been paid regularly and that was not acceptable. This was according to Mr. Paritosh Bapat, secretary of Pebble Brooks Residents Association at Thoraipakkam.

It is important to note that many residents have been getting reminders to pay their water taxes. The pending amount has been calculated based on time from which the building got approval and not based on the day from when it was occupied. It was later brought out by Mr. Arvind Ramesh, Legislator of Sholinganallur that Sholinganallur, Karapakkam and Pallikaranai projects were completed and CMWSSB has begun providing water connections to the houses from Nemmeli desalination plant.
