Nobody should be denied the right to visit the beach for recreation!!
Persons who have physical issues or movement based issues could also have fun at Chennais popular Marina beach. Greater Chennai Corporation or GCC has proposed to construct a permanent pathway for these persons with movement issues. A temporary pathway has been laid for those with physical issues at this beach. Behind Gandhi statue, a permanent pathway would be installed and this was as per an officer belonging to GCC. Treated wood would be used to make the pathway that would be 236m long and 3m width. It must be noted that GCC has floated tenders for an amount of Rs 1 crore for building a pathway at this beach in Chennai.
Visitors would be able to go till the tide line and back for this wheelchair and personnel would be available for helping these visitors at the beach. As soon as the bid gets finalised, building of pathways would start. It must be remembered that the GCC availed clearance from CRZ or coastal regulation zone 2 years back and that was due to the fact that the pathway would be close to the beach. Truth is that GCC has planned pathways at 2 spots in the beach for those with physical issues but clearance from CRZ has been availed for one pathway only.
Having pathways in the beach for those with physical issues has been a long term pending demand. This was according to Mr. Namburajan, state general secretary TN Association for the Rights of All Types of Differently Able and Caregivers. He spoke about how differently able persons also have the right to recreation. At all the recreational facilities the government must implement such types of projects. It is said that the GCC must take proper care of the pathway facility at the Marina Beach and not allow it to wither.
