Would you believe that every 25 persons who are above the age of 40 with diabetes have been affected with diabetic retinopathy issue?

Diabetes is present in almost many of us and along with hypertension it is one of the most common health conditions now. There are some persons who have uncontrolled diabetes problems in them and these persons would have serious diabetes complications like diabetic retinopathy etc. This was mentioned by some doctors in Chennai on Saturday.

It must be taken into note that these doctors have studied diabetes and diabetic retinopathy in India for nearly 50 months. It wont be a surprise that soon Artificial Intelligence or Ai might be used to screen eye complications due to diabetes.

Dr Rajiv Raman, senior consultant of Sankara Nethralaya in Chennai expressed his thoughts. He spoke about how this issue could be disastrous especially In India with a high diabetic population. He revealed that soon there would be epidemic of blindness if proper diagnosis and treatment was not carried out for diabetes

It is worthy to mention here that a group of eye doctors have suggested systematic screening programmes of those above the age of 40 for early diagnosis and treatment to avoid further complications. Neighbouring state Kerala has already made its decision to screen those with diabetes. Screening for diabetes for those above the age of 40 might be done at the PHCs or even at their door steps too.

Dr Rajiv Raman then explained about how it would be tough to screen all the diabetic persons for diabetic retinopathy issue every year. It would be possible for the health workers to assess risk using simple questions and draw blood samples. It is true that those who are at risk must undergo the tests. Information gathered is that during the study the research scientists used commercially available fundus cameras to take pictures of eyes and use AI to identify the issue. To verify the results, 3 grade screening was used by the scientists. Dr Rajiv Raman concluded that the health care worker confirmed the diagnosis and it was verified by a doctor in one of the 4 tertiary care hospitals.
