Sites near the commercial areas, bus stands, bus terminus, railway stations, government offices, stations and parks in Chennai would soon have toilets.
Under Singara Chennai 2-0 initiative, GCC or Greater Chennai Corporation would be constructing new toilets in all the 200 wards. These newly constructed toilets would have the same design plus facade, colour, logo etc. The civic body has begun collecting information about the sites mentioned above. It is now said that public toilets would be required at 1000 locations in Chennai but identifying a site is not easy. In as many as 832 locations in Chennai, GCC has been maintaining public toilets now are well known.
The presently available public toilets have not been designed properly and therefore the upcoming new toilets would be built with innovative architecture. Young architects and civil engineers would be providing valuable information in the construction of the new toilets.
A meeting took place yesterday and in the meeting the civic body officers were asked to come out with the final design for the toilets with the logo by Saturday. Information collected is that each of the 200 wards would need atleast 5 toilets at locations near to bus stops and other public transport infrastructure. The Greater Chennai Corporation would soon be obtaining NOC from the institutions in the vicinity and later on the toilets would be constructed. Mr. V. Sukumar Babu, former corporation floor leader was of the view that for proper maintenance of the toilets GCC must post one worker at every toilet.
