The members of the Save Ennore Creek Campaign have written a letter to the TN chief wildlife warden, Mr. Shekar Kuamr Niraj. They have mentioned that an order must be issued for checking the indiscriminate dumping of garbage and untreated sewage into the wetlands.
It must be noted that these members have recorded 7 nests with 25 pelican hatchings and a nest of white bellied sea eagle near the transmission towers in the Kattupalli and Ennore backwaters.
The activists have alleged that the industries located near the Ennore estuary have been polluting the wetlands and they have submitted photos of nesting birds indicating the ecological importance.
In the representation that was submitted to the forest department, the Save Ennore Creek members have identified nests and hatchlings of birds that are protected and nests were found in the field study to identify critical nesting and roosting sites of endangered birds of wetlands in the rapidly degrading Ennore- Pulicat wetlands belonging to Kattupalli island.
It was mentioned by the environmental activist Mr. Nityanand Jayaraman that nests of pelicans were found south of Kamarajar Port Gate No 2 and nest of an eagle was found on a tower in the ash choked wetlands opposite to North Chennai Thermal Power Station. This has shown the importance of Kosasthalaiyar rivers backwaters as a critical wetland habitat for the endangered bird.
The members in the statement to the forest department have also stated that a nest was built by an eagle in 2018 and it was used by the eagle for 3 consecutive years till 2021. Last year some miscreants removed the nest of the eagle.
