The government has imposed night curfew now and stricter restrictions have come into effect in Chennai. So, what most people are now up to in this scenario?

On Thursday, 6th January 2022, the buses and trains in Chennai were full of passengers and the patronage increased to a huge extent. There was no social distancing at all as many students wanted to go back to their native places as the colleges were closed until 20th January to control the spread of Coronavirus infection.

Occupancy levels in the buses going to places in Tamil Nadu like Trichy, Madurai, Thanjavur, Thiruvarur etc were increased after the government had declared holiday for the colleges till 20th January. This was mentioned by a transport officer at CMBT. The buses were full of passengers and this was mostly witnessed in all Trichy bound buses.

Another transport official explained about how many thronged the bus terminuses to leave Chennai to their native places in advance. It is important to note that special buses have been planned to operate from 11th January onwards only for the Pongal festival. He concluded that the occupancy levels could not be restricted to 50percent. The travelers have expressed their concerns regarding the increase in the number of Coronavirus cases in Chennai now.

It was later mentioned by a resident that atleast 3 persons have tested positive for Coronavirus in his apartment in Ayanavaram. He threw light on many samples that have been collected by the GCC for testing. He concluded that if many were found positive for Covid-19 infection then his area would be announced as a contaminant zone and he would not be able to go to his native in Trichy.

The uncertainty in the functioning of the hostels in Chennai has also resulted in many students leaving Chennai now. This was according to a Kallakurichi based engineering college student studying in Chennai.
