Why is there a sudden fall in the fish prices at Kasimedu market in Chennai now?

Normally, during Sundays, Kasimedu fish market in north Chennai would be buzzing with activities as many customers would visit the market to buy fish. Yesterday (Sunday), the market saw less number of customers only.

Yesterday, at the Kasimedu fish market in north Chennai there was a dip in the prices of fishes. It is now said that increase in the fish supply plus fall in demand due to the pilgrimage season have been responsible for the sudden reduction in the price of fishes.

It was mentioned by a wholesale fish trader at the Kasimedu market that after the heavy rains more than 70 boats went to catch fishes. The boats came back after 2 weeks on Sunday. The fish prices have reduced by 30% now as there were atleast10 tons of fishes. Sabarimala season plus other temple festivals have begun now and this has led to fewer customers. This despite the market receiving adequate fish supply.

Another trader spoke about how the prices would go up on the weekends as only a smaller number of boats would go into the sea to catch fish. He then shed light on how many boats were damaged in the recent heavy rains and how there was not enough money available to repair the boats. In addition, the prices of fuels have increased causing more issues for the fishermen.

It is now said that few boats would venture into the sea from Wednesday onwards and the fish supply would get affected. He concluded that it would take another month of time for the situation to become normal.
