The GCC or Greater Chennai Corporation has resumed the initial works to construct SWD or storm water drains in Kovalam basin by floating bids to build them in places like Alandur and Perungudi zones. These places are vulnerable is a known fact. This work was stalled for a long time.

It is important to mention here that GCC has been delaying the bidding procedure for 2 of the 3 components of Kovalam basin storm water drain project to modify the original detailed project report of DPR.

According to the Chennai corporation press release, works for the M1 component of the project would be carried out in most vulnerable spots such as Kannan Colony, Nehru Colony, Nanganallur, PV Nagar, Hindu Colony, Srinivasa Nagar, Sadasivam Nagar, Ram Nagar, Kuberan Nagar etc in Alandur and in Perungudi zones. It was mentioned that works in these places would be taken up at a cost of Rs 150.45 crores.

It is learnt that under this project 139 streets belonging to Chennai would have newly constructed SWD at a total length of 2720km. Information is that GCC would also restore the existing SWD in 95 streets at a total length of 12.60 km. The work would start immediately after the finalization gets over and the bids have been floated in 3 packages.

To receive funds of Rs 1714 crores for constructing drains in Kovalam basin (that covers most of the coastal areas in south Chennai) , GCC has signed an agreement with German Development Bank KfW. Koval bain has been segregated into M1 M2 and M3 components and KfW has prepared detailed project reports or DPRs . Even before the funds were sanctioned, GCC had prepared all the DPRs for all the 3 components but it delayed floating bids for M1 and M2 components. This was due to the fact that some of the proposed drains need requisition of lands.
