North Chennai is home to several industries and is highly congested is well known. Many people live in north Chennai localities and it is said that their lives are not on par with those living in south Chennai localities. Absence of important facilities has been the reason for this difference in the living. George Town belonging to north Chennai is making news now.
To redevelop George Town in north Chennai, CMDA or Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority would be preparing a plan in-house. This was mentioned by some official sources.
Two years back, George Town was selected for a pilot project where 150 hectares would be redeveloped. Information is that CMDA has initially planned to hire some independent consultants on a part time basis for a year. A notification was passed in 2020 regarding hiring an urban designer, senior architect, 3 town planners and 3 registered architects.
It was later pointed out by a senior officer belonging to Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority that the plan was changed and it would be done in-house. He hinted about the survey that has been carried out. Under the union government Amrut scheme, Chennai is one among the 25 cities that have been selected for the 2 pilot projects is known.
It is worthy to mention here that George Town is bounded by Basin Bridge on the north, Rajaji Salai on east, North Fort Road and Periyar EVR Salai on south and Wall Tax Road on the west.
To identify town planning interventions that are needed for the development of business, economy and business profile of George Town would be prepared. It is now revealed that there might be development of a logistics Park or a financial hub to cater to banking, insurance and legal sectors. Point is that the plan would include a road network and widening plan.
