The Coronavirus pandemic has been making the lives of many difficult in TN. At this juncture, the news that has emerged out now is that the TN government has exempted the local bodies/ villages from collecting the stipulated late fees for the delayed registration of births and deaths recorded in TN since 1st January 2020.It is now said that the state government would bear the penalty to be paid by the public and would compensate for the revenue loss due to this waiver to the local bodies / villages.

On Tuesday, the CM of Tamil Nadu Mr. M.K. Stalin spoke about how late fees of Rs 500, Rs 200 and Rs 100 were being collected for delayed registration of births/deaths of over 1 year, 30 days to 1 year and 21 to 30 days respectively. He was referring to the provision of Birth/Death Registration Act 1969 and TN Birth/Death rules 2000 that insists on registering birth/death within 21 days with the register of birth/death.

It was then brought out by the CM of TN that the people would be exempted from the late fees and TN government would bear the expense.  A government official spoke about how this issue of collecting penalty fee for late registration was brought to the notice of the chief minister and how it has been imposing a burden on people who have been affected by the Coronavirus pandemic.

The chief minister of TN, Mr. Stalin highlighted that on that basis exemption is being given to collect the stipulated late fees for the applications filed for delayed registrations of births/deaths in local bodies/villages during pandemic from 1st January 2020. It is learnt that the CM of TN sought cooperation of all the people for timely registering births/deaths in the state of Tamil Nadu.
