Shocking news!! Who all have been affected more in this second COVID wave in Chennai?

The second Covid-19 wave has hit the state of Chennai and TN very hard and lives of many has changed badly now. The news that has come out is that in this second wave more women and youngsters have been affected. The age and gender distribution of deaths in this second wave has been noticeable.
Information is that the proportion of women and young age persons among the deceased has become more now. In the first wave, women accounted for 27% of deaths and in this new wave they have accounted for nearly 33.5% of the deaths. Truth is that the gender distribution of the cases remains the same with men accounting for 60% of cases and women for 40% of cases. In the first wave, those in the age groups 21 to 60 accounted for 38.7% deaths but in this new wave they have accounted for 43.6%.
In the first wave, the % of those of 60 and above among the deceased was 61% and now it has come down to 56.3%. From 13.1% in the first Covid-19 wave, the percentage of elderly cases has increased to 14.4% in the second wave. The shocking piece of information is that the number of deaths reported everyday in the second wave has been on steep rise. In the last 1 week alone, there were 1200 deaths. There were a total of nearly 7900 deaths in the 12 week period from July to September. As of now atleast, the case fatality rate appears lower in the second wave when compared to the first wave.
