The Secretary for Health for the State Government of Tamil Nadu, J. Radhakrishnan, has informed that there is no need at present for the imposition of 100% lockdown. With the assessment of the situation, if required, certain restrictions may be imposed.

The Health Secretary of the State Government of Tamil Nadu undertook an inspection visit to review the additional hospital beds set up in the State Government Rajiv Gandhi General Hospital in Chennai Metro City to tackle the resurgent spread of the raging coronavirus. Subsequently, the Health Secretary had a session with the press reporters. He shared:

The impact/extent of the resurgent coronavirus is more in the districts of Chennai, Coimbatore, and Chengalpattu. In the latest release of the report by the central government regarding the status of the coronavirus spread, it is mentioned that there are 46 districts in the country affected more acutely! 3 districts from the state of Tamil Nadu are included in this!

As per the present situation, 9 districts in The state of Tamil Nadu has been affected to the extent of 2% by the resurgent coronavirus spread.  In the rest of the areas in the state, the spread is not to that extent.

As regards the Chennai Metro City, arrangements have al; ready been made for the additional requirement of beds and other amenities in all the government hospitals. It may be noted that there is a lack of effort in the activities to restrict the spread of the resurgent coronavirus.

While reviewing the analytical activities pertaining to the resurgent coronavirus spread, it is established that the impact of the spread is somewhat lesser in the hutment areas and more in multi-storeyed apartment/flats complexes!

At present, there is no need for the imposition of 100% lockdown.  As there were no vaccines last year when the coronavirus spread was raging from March 2020 onwards, there was a compulsion to impose 100% lockdown. Presently, as remedial vaccinations ARE AVAILABLE, there is no need for 100% lockdown imposition!

At the same time, in case there is an acute increase in the spread, action may be initiated to restrict all non-essential activities. However, no decision has been taken on this issue so far!"

During the above review visit by the Health Secretary checking the new arrangements at the Chennai Metro City Rajiv Gandhi General Hospital, the Head of the Hospital, Dr Therani Rajan and the Director of Medical Education, Dr Narayana Babu were also present.
