Will Chennai and its suburbs receive any rain in the coming days?

Posted on: 10/Mar/2021 9:16:24 AM
We are just in the month of March now and already the last few days have been a little harsh on the residents of Chennai and its suburbs due to the scorching heat. It is revealed by some weathermen that Chennai and its suburbs would have more hot days now.  The mornings would have low humidity and it would be due to dry incoming sea breeze. The temperature has become more by one or two degrees than the normal temperature. The nights are becoming warmer due to the picking up of humidity.

The presence of trough in the easterlies might bring rains in some parts belonging to TN till 12th March. Fact is that the rest of TN and Chennai would be dry and hot. In Chennai and in its suburbs for the next 2days, the maximum temperature would hover around 34 degrees Celsius and the minimum would be around 24 degrees Celsius. The skies above would be partly cloudy in the morning and it would clear thereafter. This was according to the prediction from IMD.

Ever since the month of March began, the day temperatures have been 1 or 2 degrees above the normal or usual and on some days the humidity went below 50percent in Chennai.

The low humidity levels in the daytime are due to the high pressure over the Bay of Bengal that has been sending dry and strong easterlies into the land. In the night time, the humidity level rises. This was brought out by some officials.

A maximum temperature of 32.6 degrees Celsius and 33.2 degrees were recorded in places like Nungambakkam and Meenambakkam respectively and the humidity levels were 73percent and 74 percent respectively. It is known that high humidity levels could lead to sweating as the body tries to cool itself. The body would tend to feel more heat and due to this there would be instant evaporation of sweat when there is low humidity.

According to Mr. N. Puviarasan, director, Area Cyclone Warning Centre, Chennai ,  the next few days, the rise in the temperature by plus or minus one or two degrees would continue. This is normal in the month of March. He added that when the temperatures increase the relative humidity would decrease and only when we go out in the sun we would feel the heat. He then explained about how heat would be felt by us indoors only when the temperatures go above 37 degrees Celsius.
