FASTAG, a new system facilitating the automatic digital transaction of the tollgate charges to be paid on the tollgates, has been made mandatory on all highways from today Tuesday, 16th February!
IT HAS ALSO BEEN ANNOUNCED THAT THE VEHICLES WITHOUT FASTAG FACILITY WILL NEED TO PAY DOUBLE THE TOLLGATE CHARGES FROM TODAY!
As per the above, in case Rs. 55/- has been the tollgate charges per car, cars without FASTag will need to pay Rs. 110/-!
So, all the owners of 4-wheelers and 6-wheelers have been in a hurry to get the FASTAG facility set up in a jiffy!
Note
- The FASTag stickers, functioning on the technology RFID (Radio Frequency Identity) are to be fixed on the cars windshield. When the vehicles enter a 20-25 metres distance towards the tollgate, the radio-frequency operated gadget fixed in the area will read the details of the vehicle through the FaSTag sticker in a few seconds and will allow the vehicles to move further!
- With this system, there will be no need to wait at the tollgates tp pay the charges! Further, there is no need to keep the monetary change required!
- Just as we recharge our mobile phones, recharging can be done on the FASTAg from a minimum of Rs. 100/- to a maximum of Rs. 10000/-! FASTag stickers can be procured from several private banks and electronic wallet systems such as PAYTM. Once the transaction is completed as the vehicle crosses the tollgate, the charges taken will be intimated through SMS to the given cell-phone number.
- IF FASTAG IS INSTALLED IN THE VEHICLE AND IF NOT FUNCTIONING, IT MIGHT BE DUE TO PROBLEMS IN RFID GADGET FIXED IN THE TOLLGATE AREA. In these instances, the central government has advised the tollgate to staff to permit the vehicles to pass without collecting any tollgate charges.
- On some selected tollgates, Zero Toll system is in operation. An explanation on how this functions: For example, let us assume that a vehicle has to move from Chennai Metro City Medavakkam to the East Coast Road or maybe from East Coast Road to Medavakkam. In this case, it is sufficient to buy a Zero ticket. No charges need be paid! The rule is that the vehicle has to cross from one tollgate to another within 25 minutes. However, on the FASTag system, this zero ticket system will be functional only if the vehicle enters the FASTAG counter system. While crossing the FASTag system, the amount, if any, will get debited automatically.
- In case we undertake travel, we have to ensure sufficient balance on the FASTag system by recharging suitably. Note that there are toll gates set up on the highway every 45 km. Tollgate charge of Rs. 50 to Rs. 90 are collected for cars. For example, if travel is undertaken from Chennai to Bengaluru on the Golden Quadrilateral Road, tollgate charges will be around Rs. 500/-! So, a suitable balance must be kept available in the Fastag system to pay this! Otherwise, one may need to pay double the tollgate charges!
