According to the public health officials and other scientists, the herd immunity has been achieved in Chennai now at last and that was the reason why the Coronavirus epidemic curve has not been pushed up after deepavali shoppings, New Year gatherings and Pongal festivities.
It is now brought out that atleast 31.6 percent of people in Tamil Nadu have developed antibodies for Sars-Cov-2, the virus responsible of Covid-19 infection.
It was pointed out by Dr. T.S. Selvavinayagam, DPH that there were atleast 22.6 million infections in the state of Tamil Nadu. This was as per the population level sero prevalence survey that was conducted between the months of October and November in 2020. Truth is that the epidemic was largely silent in many districts in Tamil Nadu.
The highest sero-positivity in Tamil Nadu was witnessed at the Perambalur district that had 5 fresh Covid-19 cases and reported less than 6 cases a day in 2020. Point is that the Perambalur districts case tally was 0.3percent of Tamil Nadu cumulative tally since March 2020. On the other hand, Nilgiris district in Tamil Nadu had the lowest sero-positivity rate of 11percent. The senior epidemiologist Dr. Jayaprakash Muliyil was of the view that these were good and encouraging results. He added that any seropositivity underestimates the positivity rate.
