Underground stations and tunnels would be there in the phase-2 metro rail project for the distance of 5km between Kolathur -Nathamuni. It is now confirmed that CMRL has floated tenders for the construction of underground stations and tunnels from Kolathur to Nathamuni.
To reach the places of destinations like workplaces and transport hubs like airports etc, many people from places like Kolathur, Retteri and Villivakkam etc went all the way to Thirumangalam and then took metro trains. This was before Covid-19 pandemic broke out. It is brought out that in the phase-2 project these places would get stations and it would help the residents in unnecessary travel.
It is important to note that the metro trains would go through stations like Kolathur Junction, Srinivasa Nagar, Villivakkam, Villivakkam bus Terminus and Nathamuni. In the corridor-5 of the phase-2 project from Madhavaram to Sholinganallur, this would be the only underground line and the remaining portions would be elevated.
Multi-modal integration:
This would be of huge benefit for the people belonging to Villivakkam. Truth is that one of the metro stations would be linked to the bus terminus and would facilitate multi-modal integration. The commuters would be able to switch from one mode of transport to another easily. There is no clarity regarding why 2 stations have been planned at Villivakkam.
It must be noted that the stretch would pass underneath the Villivakkam railway track and the distance between tunnel and ground level would be maintained at 15.5m.
It was mentioned by some officials belonging to CMRL that Kolathur-Nathamuni stretch would be a part of 52km priority corridor to be constructed from Madhavaram to CMBT and Madhavaram to Sholinganallur. It is known that many localities are highly congested with dense populations. Information is that it would take 4 nearly years to complete and the construction would be challenging.
