Southern Railways have informed that the number of trains in the Chennai Metro City suburban electric train services have been increased from today (|Monday, 28th December)
As a preventive measure against the raging coronavirus pandemic, lockdown with severe restrictions were imposed throughout the country since end |March. In a gradual process of relaxations in subsequent phases of lockdown, as the 1st phase of resumption, only a few cadres - government employees, essential field service employees, and women - were allowed t travel in the resumed suburban electric train services by the Southern Railways.
However, recently, this was relaxed and it was announced that even the private concerns employees and the media personnel can travel in the suburban electric train services.
Subsequently, Southern Railways announced that that the public may also travel in the suburban electric trains from 23rd December - but only during the non-peak hours. The public would not be allowed to travel from 7.00 AM| to 9.30 AM and from 4.00 PM to 7.00 PM.
In this scenario, giving due consideration to the public needs, the suburban electric train services have been increased from 65% to 80%. The number of trains operated per day has thus increased from 410 to 500.
Thus, a public can travel in the suburban electric services only during the non-peak hours!
