Frequency of metro trains in Chennai to be reduced

Posted on: 28/Sep/2020 9:22:58 AM
The number of passengers travelling is low and due to this reason CMRL would be reducing the metro trains in the 45km network.  It is worth mentioning that the metro trains started operating in Chennai from 7th September and the trains have been available for the commuters once every 5 minutes in the peak hours and once every 7 minutes in the non-peak hours

It is now revealed that CMRL is thinking about reducing the frequencies of the metro trains and make the trains available for every 7 minutes in the peak hours and every 14 minutes in the non-peak hours. This was according to some sources.

According to an official of CMRL, another option would be to run metro trains for every 7 minutes in the peak hours and every 14 minutes in the non-peak hours. He spoke about how in the non-peak hours there was barely any traffic and the trains were going back and forth with few commuters.

Information collected is that on weekdays 18000 to 20000 passengers use the metro trains and on Sundays the number is reduced to 10000. Working from home is now given as the main reason for less patronage in the Chennai metro trains. Fact is many office goers have been working from their homes now in Chennai.

According to an official belonging to CMRL it was clear that when the workforce is back to full strength then the traffic might reach one lakh figure like in the past before Coronavirus pandemic broke out. He assured that there would be more metro trains once the traffic gets better over ihe months in the Chennai city. Currently, CMRL runs close to 450 trips per day in Chennai.

The sources explained that with the reduction in the train frequency there would be less number of trips and the expenditure would also be brought down.
