The added areas belonging to Chennai would soon be home to as many as 54 new parks!!
These new parks would have walking tracks, lawns, play areas, trees etc. There would be yoga centres and gyms in some parks. By this, the green cover in Chennai would be expanded
Amount ranging between Rs 36 lakhs to Rs 1 crore would be spent in construction of these 54 new parks in the added areas in Chennai. Some areas where the new parks would be making their presence felt would be Ponniamman Nagar and V.S Mani Nagar in Manali, Senthil Murugan Nagar and Thamirabarani Street in Ambattur, Kottivakkam, and Senthil Nagar in Madipakkam of Perungudi zone.
Karappakam and Semmenchery belonging to Sholinganallur would also have these new parks. These parks would be constructed within 6 months of time.
It is worthy to note that given the population in Chennai and the number of properties in Chennai, there is an ideal park space of more than100 sq km but it has got just 1.6 sq km of parks. It is known that Chennai city is spread across 426 sq km.
Several new parks are in the pipeline and this was as per the deputy commissioner (works) belonging to GCC. He hinted that 4 new theme parks would be completed in Kotturpuram and in Nolambur.
The lack of adequate funds has been an issue and for this reason the project of construction of the parks could not be taken up. Truth is this project has been in the pipeline since the year 2018.
Capital funds of Rs 45 crores have been used to create new parks. This was according to an engineer belonging to GCC. Resident welfare associations or contractors would play an important role in maintaining. In the last 2 years, as many as 149 new parks were added.
