About five months back, Koyambedu wholesale market in Chennai was shut down as it had many Coronavirus positive cases. Now, this market would be reopened again.

It has been announced by the TN government that the grain market would be reopened on 18th September and vegetable market would be reopened n 28th September. It is known that a temporary vegetable market has been operating at Thirumazhisai. Mofussil bus terminus at Madhavaram currently has a fruit market and Vanagaram has flower shops.

It is now brought out that the reopening of the fruit, flower and vegetable market at Koyambedu would be carried out in a phased manner.

On Thursday evening, deputy CM of Tamil Nadu, Mr. O. Paneerselvam took the centre stage at a meeting of CMDA or Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority. The decision to re-open the Koyambedu market was taken in this meeting.

Information is the individuals would not be allowed to shop and procurement by the retail traders only would be allowed. There would not be any motorcycles, autos etc as this zone would be a no-go zone. It is mentioned that trucks carrying gods would be allowed to enter the market between 6pm and 10 pm. From early morning till noon, the vehicles of the retail traders would be allowed inside the market.

There would be screening of the retail traders before they enter the market and social distancing would be followed in the shops compulsorily. Those shops that violate social distancing norms would be dealt strictly.

Once the Koyambedu market gets reopened, then the temporary market at Thirumazhisai would be shut down. This was pointed out by some sources belonging to CMDA.

An official belonging to CMDA hinted that the Koyambedu market would be ready in a month after refurbishing works of pavements, roads and toilets etc gets completed.
