The demand for the oxygen cylinders in TN is more now that in the past. Reports of people dying from hypoxia (decrease in the oxygen levels in the blood) plus reports regarding long hunt for beds at the hospitals have led to many people in TN buying oxygen cylinders.
The people have been given warnings by the doctors about the complications that might arise due to non-professionals handling oxygen cylinders. Families of the Coronavirus patients and those having high risk of getting infection have been stocking oxygen cylinders in their homes. It is known that there are about 30 licensed oxygen manufacturing units and the demand for the cylinders have become more now.
For ensuring adequate supply of oxygen to the patients, private hospitals and nursing homes have been manufacturing oxygen. A month before Coronavirus pandemic, Chennai based Al Can was supplying just 20 to 30 oxygen cylinders per month and now this company supplies 100 to 150 oxygen cylinders. Information is the cost of a 10litre oxygen cylinder is Rs 15000 to Rs 20000.
To meet their increased demand, the nursing homes have been allowed to manufacture oxygen cylinders on their own. Through the Tamil Nadu Medical Services Corporation, the government hospitals could get additional oxygen cylinders. As per Dr. K. Sivabalan, drug controller of TN, it was very clear that till now there has been no scarcity of supply of cylinders.
According to Dr. Ramesh, medical consultant for Covid-19 at a government hospital, the use of oxygen cylinders is advisable in proper clinical set up and using those at homes could be dangerous.
