The GCC has got no other option now except to increase the number of beds at the COVID care centres in Chennai. It is known that Chennai city has been witnessing many Coronavirus positive cases every day.

The educational institutions have been utilized as COVID care centres and at present there are as many as4405 beds available at these centres. This was according to data from the Chennai Corporation. For the sake of more patients, there would be additional 5270beds apart from the existing number of beds.

The total number of beds that would be available at the COVID care centres would be 10,125. Point is COVID care centres have been set up at convention centres, unused slum board apartments etc in Chennai and there would be 13000 beds overall.

Many critical patients need admission at the hospitals for their treatment. It is mentioned that Chennai Corporation has created COVID care centres to treat patients without major symptoms to free beds at the hospitals for the treatment of critical patients.

An official belonging to the corporation spoke about how positive patients without symptoms have been sent to home isolation and how at the COVID care centres there are just 20% of active cases. The civic body has decided to take over large buildings that violate any norms to increase the number of beds.

The CMDA has refused to issue completion certificates and this has made buildings vacant. It is now revealed that these buildings would increase the number of beds. For the sake of breaking chain densely populated areas, the GCC has made arrangements to house 25,000 persons.

These persons would be shifted from the slum areas. This was as per the state administration minister Mr. S.P. Velumani. Presently, 2500 persons have been staying in the facilities and there are plans to add space for another 25000 persons.
