For the purpose of containing the spread of Coronavirus infection, wearing facemasks and maintaining social distancing are very important. It seems that the Royapuram residents are not bothered about these two.
This Royapuram zone has got nearly 5500 Covid-19 cases and people are not bothered about the virus or about the authorities� decision to strictly enforce norms. It is known that senior citizens belong to the high risk group and in the Royapuram zone senior citizens do not wear facemasks to protect themselves from Coronavirus infection. Difficulty in breathing while wearing the facemasks has been cited as the main reason by the people for not wearing masks.
It was mentioned by a resident of Royapuram that she does not wear facemasks now as she had issues in breathing while wearing masks. She added that initially she wore masks but after 15 minutes she felt uncomfortable and hence stopped wearing masks. The youngsters here also do not wear facemasks or maintain social distancing and this inspite of the police officials warning them.
Another resident of Old Washermenpet spoke about how at the beginning of lockdown the streets were empty and no one roamed outside. She explained about how in the last few weeks there were many roaming without wearing facemasks and nobody cared for the advice.
It has been brought out now by some shopkeepers belonging to this zone that they do not allow the customers at their shops without wearing facemasks or maintain social distancing. He added that it was difficult to make the public follow rules.
For not maintaining social distancing, many shops in Royapuram zone were sealed and this was as per a senior official belonging to GCC. He hinted that a fine amount was collected from those who do not wear masks. It must be noted that the police have been taking strict action against those who violate the rules.
