West Mambalam is an important residential and commercial locality in Chennai and this place is making news now.

There was overcrowding in the shops present in the Arya Gowda Road in West Mambalam on Monday. This has led to GCC sealing this important road in Chennai. It must be noted that as many as 150 shops and bank branches were shut down in this locality.

As per the Chennai Corporation City Health Officer, Mr. Jagadeesan it was clear that the number of Coronavirus positive cases in the area was 15.

The local field staff at every area along with the help of police have got the right to take action on any shop by closing it down if they were found to violate social distancing norms. This was according to Mr. Madhusudhan Reddy, Chennai Corporation Joint Commissioner (Health). He added that the decision on closing any road normally would be taken after 5 index cases get reported.

In this Arya Gowda Road, a number of rice traders and bank branches are present. Information is police officers have closed this busy commercial area after a large number of persons thronged the stretch. It must be noted that this road has been attracting huge crowds after the local field support staff in the Kodambakkam zone have sealed other commercial areas in the vicinity.

There were some complaints from the residents that they were not allowed to purchase essentials ahead of the lockdown from 19th to 30th June 2020. It is important to note that in the 15 zones in GCC atleast 300 containment zones like Arya Gowda Road have been barricaded.

Just a few weeks back in Chennai city, the number of roads that were closed during lockdown reached 1000. After June month this number has reduced to 300. It is known that there are around 40,000 roads in  Chennai city.
