On Friday, 12th June 2020, the state government made it clear before the Madras High Court that it does not have any plan to implement total lockdown even in parts of Chennai city to prevent the spread of Coronavirus.
There was a message circulating on the social media regarding TN government stopping issuing e-passes to the Chennai residents for travelling to other districts in TN. It must be noted that the TN state government dismissed that message as rumour.
Decisions regarding lockdown were being taken by the TN state government on the basis of the recommendations of the technical committee for the sake of suggesting ways to control the spread of Coronavirus infection. This was pointed out by S.R. Rajagopal, additional advocate general while appearing before a Division Bench comprising Justice Vineet Kothari and Justice R. Suresh Kumar.
The additional advocate general then explained about how as of now lockdown 5 has been going with some relaxation. He added that though the number of persons testing positive for Coronavirus had increased in Chennai city, the government has been taking many steps to quarantine them and their family members. He then mentioned about the restrictions that were imposed on the movement of those belonging to particular buildings and streets.
To a question regarding whether the government has got any plans to implement a complete lockdown atleast in parts of Chennai city, the additional advocate general replied in negative.
The justices of HC of Madras also wanted to know whether the news about the government having stopped issuing e-passes to the Chennai residents for their travel to other districts. To this question, the additional advocate general dismissed it as rumours.
Mr. S.R. Rajagopal, AAG, later revealed e-passes for travel were issued by the collector of the destination to which the Chennai resident desired to visit. Important information is that collectors had to issue e-passes after taking into account various circumstances including the need to quarantine the visitors after letting them into the districts.
The Corona virus intensity has changed totally now and many asymptomatic persons test Corona positive now. People must provide their support in the fight against the spread of Coronavirus infection.
