The truck owners and many political leaders are not happy now regarding the commencement of toll collection. Point is on Monday, 20th April 2020, many toll plazas began functioning. The NHAI sources have mentioned that the local authorities did not allow pertain of 3 toll plazas.

The drivers were confused and not happy as initially they were told that there would not be any toll collection for a time of 3 months. A driver expressed his thoughts and said that the toll collection was not fair. Not many vehicles were seen on the roads and this was as per some toll plaza operators. According to the operators it was clear that they were asked to keep the toll plazas opened even for less number of vehicles.

A toll operator later spoke about how the same number of persons was employed and how the staffs were exposed to the dangers due to order from NHAI. No private or public transport vehicles crossed the toll plaza as the TN state government is continuing with the lock down. It is worth mentioning here that only trucks, government vehicles, ambulances and vehicles having special passes have crossed the toll plazas.

Toll operator revealed that a section of vehicles had FASTag without balance as they were unable to recharge during the lock down. President of State Lorry Owners Association, Mr. Kumaraswamy, spoke about how they petitioned state and central governments asking them to suspend toll fee collection. He explained about how the shortage of drivers hasnt stopped the transporting of essential goods. He added that the rise in the toll rates from 1st April was not fair.

It is well known that from 1st April the toll rates have been increased at 26 toll plazas. Mr. Ramdoss, founder of PMK and Mr. Vaiko, MDMK leader have both questioned the increase toll rates at these 26 toll plazas.
