Chennai airport to have more app-based cabs, passengers to be benefited

Presently, just one app-based cab service is allowed to pick up passengers from the arrival terminals at the Chennai airport. This would change soon.

Beginning from February, passengers landing at the Chennai airport need not worry about the shortage of cabs as multiple cab operators would be available for the passengers. The passengers have complained that they have been forced to book vehicles from only one app if they wanted to get picked from the arrival terminals.

Hence, AAI or Airport Authority of India has decided to bring in more app-based cab services for the passengers. There is a lane in front of the terminal and the majority of the passengers prefer to board cabs from this lane. The passengers do not want to go to the parking lot to board other cabs.

To work out a method to have more cab operators to run the service from the airport, a meeting took place in New Delhi with the representatives of the cab operators. At present, Ola is the only cab operator is known.

As per a senior AAI official, it is clear that multiple operators would be getting the contracts. He revealed how the existing contract system allows one prime operator and 2 secondary operators. Information is 2 other operators who had counters inside the terminals have withdrawn. He added that the current procedure was not friendly at all and changes as needed in the contract procedure t ensure that there would be more than one cab service to pick up the passengers.

It is worth mentioning here that Ola was paying the high license fee and it was allowed to pick up the passengers from the terminal itself. From the parking lots or from the pick-up points, other cab operators were allowed to pick up the passengers and this had created chaos.
