Redevelopment and renovation works are in progress at one of the most prominent railway stations in Tamil Nadu, the Egmore Railway Station under the Redevelopment Plan.
The railway officials expressed confidence that the renovation will be completed before next March.
Chennai Egmore Railway Station is known as the Gateway to South India. This railway station was set up in 1908.
With the passing time and developments, it has grown further over this period and has become one of the most prominent railway stations. The main reason for this is that this railway station has become the main travel centre for the people from the southern districts.
Several express trains including Pandian, Nellai, Kanyakumari, Podhigai, Muthunagar, Rameswaram, Malaikkottai, and Vaigai express trains operate from here every day. These express trains return to Chennai from the cities in the southern districts.
32 trains start daily from Egmore Railway stations. Another 32 trains stop here while proceeding to further destinations. Around 1.5 Lakhs passengers come and go every day. Various initiatives have been undertaken to provide more facilities to these passengers.
Meanwhile, a decision was taken up for the renovation of Egmore Station under the redevelopment Scheme. Accordingly, activities were initiated to make Egmore Station of world quality standard.
More facilities are being provided under this renovation scheme for the passengers.
The Railway Board has sanctioned Rs. 20 Crores for this renovation project. Subsequently, renovation activities have commenced.
In this scenario, the railway officials have expressed confidence that this renovation will be completed before March next year. In this regard, they shared:
There are 11platforms in Egmore Railway Station. The platforms from 1st to 6th come under zone-1. Platforms from 7th to 11th come under zone-2. Several activities are set to be undertaken here.
3 waiting halls are to be set up in Egmore Railway prepaid air-condition waiting room and 2nd class passengers waiting room.
Station and opened for passengers. These 3 waiting halls will consist of pre-paid waiting rooms, higher class ticket passengers waiting room, and 2nd class ticket passengers waiting room.
Toilet of special category for the differently-abled passengers will be available in the prepaid air-conditioned waiting room and the 2nd class passesengers waiting room. Further, infants breastfeeding room, dress-change rooms, etc., will be available.
The renovation work of the air-conditioned waiting hall and rest-room on the 1st floor of the railway station is to be taken up.
The erection work/installation of electric lifts on the 4th platform is in progress. These lifts are being installed in order for easy access to the air-conditioned waiting hall and air-conditioned rooms located on the 1st floor.
Further, 5 escalators are to be installed in the passengers gathering junction and important platforms. In the entrance from the Gandhi Irwin road to Egmore Railway Station, an escalator each will be installed on platforms
It may be noted that 5 escalators are already functioning presently in Egmore Railway Station.
Presently, the task of widening the overbridge is in progress. A modern 2-wheeler parking station is to be set up on the side of Poonamallee High Road. A parking station will also be set up on the side of Gandhi-Irwin Road.
Additional seats will be set up for the passengers in all the platforms of the station.
Roads/routes will be set up for the easy access of the passengers to the Railway Station.
Further, renovation of the surrounding areas, granite flooring on the platforms, Name boards for all the platforms, better ventilation facility, renovation of the ticket booking counters, stainless steel chairs in all the platforms are all to be arranged.
We are confident that all these above activities will be completed before March.
