Posted on: 07/Nov/2019 9:40:25 AM
Team from AAI or Airport Authority of India headquarters that included senior officers of Air Navigation Services were very busy on Wednesday, 6th November. The reason was they inspected 2 sites in the Chennai city for setting up of second airport in Chennai. It is now said that the move to set up a second airport in Chennai has gained momentum with the inspections for the site.

It is worthy to mention here that Parandur and another site between Mamandur and Seyyur was inspected by the AAI team.

The site visit has been completed and checking of other parameters based n the documents and survey would be done soon. This was confirmed by a senior AAI official. For the setting up of a second airport, the state government had promised to acquire around 3500 acres of land. He spoke about how the state government prefers a site that is not too far from the airport and south Chennai.

Information is AAI team would have to look at airspace management at locations near Chennai airport and the locations are around 80 km from Chennai.

It must be taken into account that AAI team would also look out for the obstacles like hills, buildings, proximity to defense airfields, wind pattern etc. This work would be in addition to checking whether proximity to Chennai airport would be an issue or not.

It is well known that the defense airspace in Tambaram and in Arakkonam has constricted the Chennais airspace. It is now said that the ministry is working to coordinate with defense for use of airspace and airfields for commercial planes.

Important point is proximity to anther airport might not be a hindrance because air traffic could be managed to overcome it. After the concept of second airports in the cities came out, the ministry of civil aviation has also waived the distance stipulated between 2 airports. It must be noted that Navi Mumbai airport is 45 km from Mumbai airport. Soon, AAI team would be submitting the reports to a committee in New Delhi. After the committee picks up a site, AAI would conduct further studies to identify the locations.
