For all those who violate plastic ban, the Chennai Corporation will be sending out notices and also record the violation made. Starting from last week of May, penalties are to be imposed on those who repeatedly violate the rule.
It is to be noted that since 1st January 2019, use of plastic covers and items are banned. And the civic body went on raid to curb use of plastic items from shops, hotels and all other kinds of commercial spaces.
The zonal officers are bound to spread awareness in this regard. All the junior engineers and assistant engineers are set to roll out notifications for violators. The civic body may even run the extra mile to cancel out trading license on those who violate for over 4 times. From the end of this month, penalty will also be imposed. As of now, the violators are getting warned and alarmed about the penalty system, said deputy commissioner of health.
Until now, over 198 metric tonnes of plastic items are seized from over 1000s of shops. The civic body says it shall continue with raids across commercial establishments.
In his note about this, one of the corporation official says the market still sees the use of banned plastic items. He adds the penalty system will probably aid in strictly following the rule. There will also be an exhibition to showcase all other kinds of eco-friendly alternates to plastics for which the corporation shall conduct meetings with residents, stakeholders and traders.
In addition, health department will also join hands with the food safety department and conduct raids in hotels and other eatery outlets where not just plastic use will be raided, but also inspect for their respective sanitation certificates.
Note that the state government had rolled out an order to impose penalties. Any kind of storage or transport or supply of plastic items shall be charged with Rs 25000 fine amount. And during second time, the fine amount will be Rs 50,000 and during third time, it will be increased to Rs 1 lakh.
