By-election on 19th May for the 4 vacant Legislative Assembly Constituencies

The Election Commission has announced that by-elections are scheduled to be held on 19th May for the 4 vacant Legislative Assembly Constituencies in Tamil Nadu.

Prior to the announcement of the parliamentary elections, there were 21 vacant Legislative Assembly Constituencies in Tamil Nadu. The Election Commission had announced that by-elections for 18 vacant Legislative Assembly Constituencies in Tamil Nadu will also be conducted on 18th April along with the parliamentary elections.

As cases are pending, it was announced that the elections will not be conducted in the 3 vacant Legislative Assembly Constituencies of Thirupparankundram, Oddapidaram, and Aravakurichi.

After this, Sulur AIADMK MLA Kanakaraj passed away. Thus, the number of vacant Legislative Assembly Constituencies has now increased to 4.

All political parties including DMK insisted that the elections must be held for the vacant constituencies. DMK filed a petition on this to the Supreme Court. Meanwhile, the DMK candidate Saravanan who had filed a petition regarding the election in Thirupparankundram constituency has withdrawn his case. Another person, Krishnaswamy also took back his petition regarding the Oddapidaram elections. However, there were still no announcements regarding the by-elections.

In this scenario, the Election Commission has announced that by-elections are scheduled to be held on 19th May for the 4 vacant Legislative Assembly Constituencies in Tamil Nadu.  When the 7th Phase of the countrywide parliamentary elections are being conducted, the election will be conducted for these Assembly Constituencies as well,

It has been announced that counting of votes will be done on 23rd May for both parliamentary and the assembly elections.

  • Last date for taking back the nomination � 2nd May

  • Date of the election � 19th May
