In a move that drew appreciation from the AIADMK, the Centre today summoned the Sri Lankan envoy to the country and told him that the arrested fishermen were to be treated humanely and to be sent back home at the earliest.
19 Indian fishermen were arrested by the Sri Lankan Navy on Wednesday and another 53 on Thursday for allegedly fishing in Lankan waters. The External Affairs Ministry said that Wednesday’s prisoners were sent to Talaimannar in the northwest of Sri Lanka and that the Indian consul in Jaffna will meet them.
