From 1st of January 2019 onwards in the state of Tamil Nadu, the usage of plastic has been banned. It is now revealed that the single screen film exhibitors or theatres are finding it difficult to cope up with this plastic ban. These single screen theatres in TN have been depending on the plastics for packaging and wrapping food and beverages. The amazing piece of news is the multiplexes have adapted to the plastic ban better than the single screen theatres. The main issue is about replacing plastic coated paper cups used for hot beverages etc.
It is worthy to mention that the state of TN has got 1127 operating public screens and out of these as many as 407 are multiplexes or complexes. There are more than 6.14 lakh seats present in the theatres in Tamil Nadu. The managing director of popular multiplex, Mayajaal, Mr. Udeep, praised the state government and said the plastics ban has been good initiative by the state government. He then shed light on how his multiplex had switched to paper cups from December and how wooden plates and spoons were used. It must be noted that areca leaf plates and cups are also used now in Mayajaal. Roughly 25% of people who come to Mayajaal take snacks at the counter.
Mr. Kailash B, Gupta, CFO of Inox Leisure Ltd, shared his thoughts about the plastic ban in TN. He explained about the importance of plastic ban and termed it as an environmental friendly initiative and it was superb. He spoke about how replacing plastic coated cups with paper cup was the major issue for them. It is revealed that the multiples association of India had requested the government to consider one month extension. He added that by using paper cups the packaging costs would be increased. After the box office collections, income got from the food and beverages are the second major source of revenue for the film exhibitors or theatres. Mr. Abhishek, one of the owners of Priya Enterplex, spoke about the availability of paper cups and said how for the 1500 people who watch one show, 2 lakh cups in a month were ordered in advance.
