Free laptop scheme is presently meant for the students belonging to higher secondary classes and colleges. The superb piece of news that has emerged out now is the state government is planning to extend this free lap top scheme for the students studying in the classes 9 and 10 also belonging to the government and government aided schools in the state of Tamil Nadu. On Sunday, 6th January 2018, the first formal intimation of this proposal was made by the education minister, Mr. K. A. Sengottaiyan in Erode.
It was pointed out by the sources at the secretariat that the education minister had directed the education department officials recently to prepare a proposal so that students of classes 9 and 10 would also get included in the free laptop scheme. He then directed the officials to forward it to the centre to get approval. In 2011-12 the free laptop scheme was first introduced by former chief minister of TN, Dr. Jayalalitha for the students belonging to class 12. The education minister Mr. Sengottaiyan highlighted about how the centre had given assurance that it would look into the free lap top proposal for the students of classes 9 and 10. It must be taken into account that earlier the students belonging to class 11 were brought under this scheme and more than 38 lakh free laptops have been distributed for the students in TN. It is said that the government would not incur huge additional expenditure.
An officer belonging to the education department shared his thoughts about the free laptop scheme for the students and said if a student gets a laptop in class 10 then there is no need to give another free lap top in class 11 or 12. There would not be huge financial burden. He was unsure regarding the government working out a clear blueprint on this matter. To provide free laptops to 5.3 lakh students in TN, government had allotted Rs 758 crores for the year 2017/18 is known. The news gathered is Lenovo, computer manufacturing company, had won the tender for distributing 15.66 lakh laptops to the students last month.
