Today (Wednesday, 5th December) marks the 2nd death anniversary of the former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, J Jayalalithaa.
She has the rather proud records of achievements � having been the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu 6 times, had been the General Secretary of her party for a long period of 29 years and also a reigning actress for 17 years in her glittering film career.
The word �Amma� became magical and was the chant of the lakhs of followers. When she waved her hands to the crowd with a smiling face, the ovation pierced the sky! So unique was her status and popularity and fame.
She was quite intelligent even while young and excelled in her studies securing the 1s rank at the state level in her 10th Standard. She learned both Karnatic music and Bharathanatyam right from a very young age. However, due to the family situations, she had to discontinue her studies. Jayalalithaa entered the film industry and reigned as a popular heroine/actress for 17 years.
She acted with MGR as the hero in 28 films. Most of them were mega hits and were hugely popular with the film fans.
Jayalalithaa also acted with most of the leading heroes of the film world including Sivaji Ganesan, SSR, Jayshankar, Muthuraman, NTR, Nageswara Rao, and Dharmendra.
Jayalalithaa was a leading heroine of her period having acted in 127 films in Tamil, Kannada, and Hindi. She was conversant with 7 languages. With her sweet voice, she had also sung a few film songs.
Guided by MGR, Jayalalithaa joined AIADMK in 1980. She was appointed as the Party�s secretary of propaganda. She was a member of the high-level committee of the nutrition meal scheme and was also a member of the Rajya Sabha.
When the party AIADMK got split after the death of MGR, during the elections conducted in the year 1989, Jayalalithaa contested with �cock� as the symbol and won the status of the opposition party in the Legislative Assembly. Subsequently, the split parties merged and unified and Jayalalithaa was made the General Secretary of AIADMK.
During the Legislative assembly elections conducted in the year 1991, Jayalalithaa�s party won 225 seats scoring a magnificent victory and she assumed office as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu. She also won the Legislative Assembly elections in the years 2001, 2011, and 2016. Thus, she became the longest-serving woman Chief Minister.
Several remarkable welfare schemes were introduced during her rule - cradle infant scheme, rainwater harvesting system, free rice from the ration shops, Amma Canteens, etc. They were so hugely popular that many other states followed with the same.
Though she was just an opposition as a leader in Assembly, Jayalalithaa was still immensely powerful. She made it a regular affair for the various All India leaders to visit her residence at Poes Gardens for requesting her support on the various issue and also for consultancy
When she took ill 2 years ago, she was admitted to Apollo Hospital and was being treated for 75 days. However, after this prolonged illness, she passed away on this date � 5th December. Lakhs and Lakhs of devout followers could not contain their grief being overwhelmed with her death.
Jayalalithaa had proved that women could be hugely successful in politics as well. She was popular for being known as a brave leader at All India Level. Various welfare schemes introduced by her has provided lifeline and prosperity to lakhs of people.
Thus, there is no doubt whatsoever that especially the economically weaker section of the population will glorify her while honouring her memory and her deeds!
