The State leader of the Congress Mr. Gnanadesikan headed a protest against alcohol sales outside the collector’s office yesterday.

He said, ‘Prohibition of alcohol was in place during the Emergency led by the Congress in 1971 but later governments removed it. This was followed by the Tamil Nadu government-run Tasmac shops that opened in 1983. Today, there are 6,500 Tasmac shops in Tamil Nadu that earn a revenue of Rs. 20,000 crores. Rs. 120 crores was the sales on Pongal alone.’

Mr. Gnanadesikan went on to say that there were better ways of generating revenue and that the youth were turning into alcoholics. He also said that it was becoming necessary to restart the Prohibition movement in the state.
