NHAI or National Highway Authority of India was established in the year 1988 is known. This NHAI is an autonomous agency belonging to Indian government.  According to NHAI chief general manager, Mr. Alok Deepankar, the revised detailed project report or DPR for the 19km Maduravoyal-Chennai Port elevated corridor project would be ready in another 3 to 4 months of time. It must not be forgotten that this project got stalled for the last 5 years.

Mr. Alok Deepankar spoke about how this project which would be a six lane one up to Napier Bridge would be implemented in the next financial year. He later threw light on how NHAI is working on new alignment based inputs from the state government and how a new DPR is being prepared.

As per a source belonging to Chennai Port, revenue model would be worked out after detailed project report is ready. Later on decision would be made to get funding from Bharatmala. The source also hinted that in the beginning the project was based on BOT model or Build, Operate and Transfer but now it would be converted into EPC model or Engineering Procurement and Construction. With 26 metres deck width, the project would be six- lane from Maduravoyal to Napier Bridge. Previously when the project was announced it was a four lane highway with a deck width of 17 metres.

One important piece of information is there is plan to have as many as 10 entry and exit ramps now. It is said that places like Kamarajar Salai, Spur Tank Road, Koyambedu(before and after grade separator) might have exit ramps. The entry ramps are proposed at places like Sivananda Salai, College Road, Koyambedu (before and after grade separator) and these would be included in the revised DPR. The sources from Port revealed that the cost would also go up.

According to an official belonging to Chennai Port, this project would be highly beneficial to the Chennai people as it would reduce their travelling time. This would be once when this project is implemented. At present in the city of Chennai there is no six lane highway and this upcoming six- lane highway would be superb.
