Installation of power systems at North Chennai metro line soon

Many people in Chennai city use metro trains to reach their places of destination. In less than two years of time the people living in the North Chennai would be benefited as the work to link North Chennai with metro trains is going on now. The news is CMRL or Chennai Metro Rail Limited would soon begin installation of critical power systems needed for the transit facility operation. For the installation of these power systems a tender was floated.

By the month of March in the year 2020, the 9km phase-1 extension that would link Washermenpet to Wimco Nagar stretch with rest of Chennai city metro rail would be ready. It is said that CMRL wants to finalise the firm and this firm would play an important part in designing, manufacturing and installing overhead equipment or OHE along the tracks and integrated power systems needed for the operation of trains and stations. This was the main purpose of floating the tender. Not only that, the firm that takes up the contract is expected to test and commission these critical power systems plus play a crucial role in training CMRL staffs to provide both technical as well as maintenance support. An elevated maintenance depot is being built at Wimco Nagar with as many as 17 stabilising lines are known. The installation of these power systems would be done at this elevated maintenance depot and in 18 months of time the contractor would complete the work.

The important piece of information is north Chennai would be linked to as many as 9 stations and 3 of the stations would be present underground. It is known that Siemens AG of Germany and its Indian arms Siemens Ltd India installed power supply and OHE for the 45km phase-1. CMRL uses 25kV AC traction power supplied through OHE for the operation of trains in the 2 corridors of phase-1 and 33kV of power for the utilities at the stations is used by CMRL.

It was in 2016 that construction of north Chennai line began and in the year 2017 the tunnelling for 2km stretch from Washermnenpet to Korukkupet was completed. From then onwards work is going on to install all systems needed for the operation of trains starting with ballastless tracks. Installation of power supply equipment plus signalling would be done once when the track work gets finished. This was confirmed by the officials of metro rail. The construction of stations plus elevated corridor and depot is also being carried out simultaneously.
