Low pass percentage in Anna University

Students and lecturers at Anna University are worried as nearly 50 students out of a class of 70 have arrears in Mathematics in their third semester.
According to the students, the sums that appeared in the exam were totally different from those taught and practiced during classes. The lecturers, however, claim that there is hardly any time to finish such a large syllabus as the 1st years do not have a strong foundation in the subject.
According to one professor, students fresh from school are unable to apply the mathematics they learn to the subject of their choice.Should this be an issue to be tackled at the school level? Or is it a problem of redesigning college curriculum?
