Significance of Tamil New Year

The state of Tamil Nadu to enjoy Tamil New Year today, the 14th of April 2017. This day marks the beginning of traditional Tamil New Year where the state of Tamil Nadu and Sri Lanka declare public holiday every year.

In addition to the Tamil-speaking population, there are many other people from distinguished communities in India who celebrate the traditional New Year on this same day.

Those in Kerala, celebrate it as Vishu and those in Assam, celebrate Bihu, Vaishakhi in Punjab and in West Bengal, it is Pohela Boishakh. The new year is also celebrated in different other parts of the country including Odisha, Uttar Pradesh, Manipur, Tripura, Himachal Pradesh, Rajasthan, Haryana, inter alia.

Celebrations in Tamil Nadu

On this day, in Tamil Nadu, people celebrate with their families by cleaning up their home thoroughly, and pray to the lord with special offerings for a beautiful start of the year. They visit nearby temples and pray for goodness in health and life. Vegetarian delicacies are prepared on this day as a sign of celebration. They get blessings from elders and celebrate the day with full enthusiasm.

In Tamil, it is called Pudhu Varsham (Meaning New Year). This day is the very first day of Chithirai (the first month according to Tamil calendar). In other way, the day is called Chithirai Vishu.

To pray the lord, people offer a mix of three fruits: jackfruit, banana and mango along with assets in any form: gold, silver or other jewelries, and flowers, betel leaves, coconut, etc.

Likewise, in Kerala, the auspicious day is celebrated and believed to bring all goodness and good luck and prosperity to the families throughout the following year. To welcome all the positive vibes and energy, ladies draw Kolam in different color shades using rice flour in the entrance of home.
