The travel insurance scheme for train passengers, at a cost of 92 Paise, for Rs. 10 Lakhs has been implemented.
This travel insurance scheme is for the train passengers who book their tickets online. This became effective from yesterday (Thursday, 1st September).
While booking tickets online, if the passenger is willing, 92 Paise extra has to be paid for taking the travel insurance.
Under this travel insurance scheme, if the passengers lose their lives or get seriously injured and debilitated, his/her family will be given Rs. 10 Lakhs as compensation. The passengers who lose their organs will be paid Rs. 7.5 Lakhs and those who get injured will be paid Rs. 2 Lakhs for their medical treatment.
This travel insurance scheme would not apply to children under the age of 5, foreigners and the passengers travelling in suburban trains.
If the ticket booked online is cancelled, the amount paid for travel insurance will not be refunded.
Insurance companies ICICI, Lombard, Royal Sundaram, and Sriram have joined with IRCTC to offer this travel insurance scheme for the train passengers who book their tickets online.
The ministry of railways is also planning to appoint an inspector to monitor whether the facilities for the passengers are provided properly.
