A direct service of the Chennai Metro Rail from Koyambedu to Chennai Airport is unlikely for the moment. Those traveling to the Airport from Koyambedu will need to change trains at the Alandur Metro Station.
Initially, there was a plan to connect Koyambedu and Chennai Mofussil Bus Terminus with Chennai airport, a distance of 15 km. But, now it seems difficult to implement. A special loop-like facility created beyond Alandur station would help make the direct travel possible.
An official from the CMRL says, The plan is still technically feasible but it will be quite difficult to implement. The problem will arise when we start services to St. Thomas Mount in October. So, the dilemma is, will we be able to run a direct service to St. Thomas Mount or to Chennai airport from Koyambedu? It is possible to do both, but it will be very challenging and difficult for operational reasons. We are still thinking whether or not to implement it. Therefore, when the service from Little Mount to airport begins, there will not be any direct service from Koyambedu to the airport. Eventually, depending on how the services progress, we may take a call.
Commuters do not seem too disappointed. They say, It is not as if we cannot change trains at Alandur, but if direct travel is made possible, then we will save a lot of time.
