M K Stalin has been unanimously elected as the leader of the DMK legislative party.
So, he is set to become the leader of the opposition in the new legislative assembly.

Chakrapani was elected as the whip of the DMK legislative party and K Pichandy was elected as the deputy whip.
DMK party representatives explained that as the DMK leader Karunanidhi is quite aged, he would not able to participate in the assembly proceedings regularly. It is also doubtful whether a special seating arrangement as required by his present physical condition will be provided. So, M K Stalin has been elected the leader of the DMK legislature party.
DMK won only 23 seats in the 2011 elections and thus lost its position as the leading opposition party. DMDK, which won 29 seats, became the leading opposition party. DMDK leader Vijaykanth was the leader of the opposition.
